A special guest appearance in the veggies section last Saturday… organic white beetroot (Beta vulgaris ‘Albina Vereduna’) from Dapto Community Farm. Lots of people ask about heirloom vegetable varieties, so it was great to have this special bunch to show off. Nobody was brave enough to try them though, so we took them home to put them to the test ourselves.

The soft skin peeled off easily, and they smelled just like their lovely red relatives. They taste very much the same too, if not slightly sweeter. Turns out there are at least a dozen different heirloom beet varieties including yellow (gold), cylindrical shaped, flat and stripey.
